Rare Shaligramas

By nature shaligramas are rare. They are found only in the Kali Gandaki river in Nepal. This very challenging mountainous region has been untouched by large number of humans until the last few years. In the past ten years (2000) trekking and tourism has taken humans into these areas. Unlike the past were the shaligramas were worshiped mostly only in indian continent but the popularity and demand for Shaligramas are worldwide now. This has led the local Gandaki people to search and pick all the available shaligramas for selling everywhere.

Through out the banks of Kali Gandaki from Jomsom upto Damodar Kund Shaligramas are found along with millions of other non shaligrama stones. It requires a trained eye to spot a shaligrama out of zillion other stones in the open area. The Shaligramas do not appear as black and shiny stones when they are lying in the river side. They turn dark and shiny only after constant exposure to water and wiping during puja. Hence spotting a shaligrama in the out is much more a difficult task for a unseasoned picker. The stones that are lying inside the path of river water are darker and smoother. The ones that are found outside of the path of river are not dark and smooth at least when picked up new.

The shaligramas are made by vajra kita worms as per purana. They might have lived in the past yugas or early part of kaliyuga but at present these worms are extinct.  That means, the availability of them is limited to what is already created.  The constant mining for shaligramas are fast depleting the existing ones. Only time can answer whether the demand vs availability will hold for future years to come.

Most of the people who have interest in Shaligrama already know lakShmI narayana shaligrama are the rarest among all. But the texts go beyond it and here is the list of rare according to the texts.
